Happy #LGBTQHistoryMonth! Let’s make sure it’s as #intersectional as possible!
Patrisse Cullors and Alicia Garza are queer Black activists. Patrisse is an alum of UCLA, a Fulbright scholar, and has an Honorary Doctorate from Clarkson University. Alicia is an alum of UCSD with a degree in anthropology and sociology. They, along with their friend Opal Tometi, cofounded #BlackLivesMatter. Alicia’s activism work addresses issues around health, student, domestic workers, police brutality, anti-racism, and violence against trans and gender non-conforming people of color. Patrisse’s activism began in her teens and she advocates for prison abolition and anti-racism. As cofounders of BLM they collectively speak out against police killings and brutality, and racial inequality in the criminal justice system. Patrisse was forced out her home at 16 when she came out to her parents as queer. Though in 2016, she married her spouse, Janaya Khan. In 2018 Alicia married Malachi Garza, a transgender male activist. #LGBTQHistory #QTPOCHistory #AliciaGarza #PatrisseCullors #Intersectionality
